Details to note when starting and shutting down a diesel engine

Aug. 08, 2025

The fuel and engine oil should be of the required grade and kept clean.

The maximum start time for the generator should not exceed 10 seconds, and the interval should be maintained at 1 minute to preserve the battery life.

Once the engine is started, the engine speed should be reduced and warmed up under an appropriate load. Load operation should only be performed after the engine reaches operating temperature. Immediately starting the engine can cause accidents such as shaft seizure, bearing burns, cylinder scuffing, and cylinder seizure.

When the air temperature is below 0°C, a flame preheating device can be used. Each cylinder of a swirl chamber diesel engine has a preheating chamber. Using a flame preheating device, preheat for a maximum of 3 minutes, and the maximum starting time should not exceed 15 seconds. Once the ignition is activated and the engine is turning, the starter motor can be operated for 20-25 seconds. If the engine fails to start, wait 2 minutes before starting again (preheat for another 1 minute before the next start).

Preheat the engine when temperatures are too low.

Do not shut down the engine immediately from full load, as this can damage engine components due to overheating. Instead, allow the engine to idle for a period of time after unloading to allow the temperature to reach equilibrium before shutting it down.
