Diesel engines are widely used in generators, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, industrial machines, and commercial vehicles. Although modern diesel engines are designed for reliable and continuous operation, unexpected faults can still occur during operation.
When an engine develops a problem, the correct response is essential. Continuing to operate a faulty engine without inspection may cause further damage and increase repair costs.
1. Stop the Engine Safely
If the engine shows abnormal symptoms such as unusual noise, excessive vibration, overheating, low oil pressure, abnormal smoke, or a sudden loss of power, the first step is to assess whether the engine should be stopped immediately.
For serious warning signs, stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. Do not continue operating the engine simply to complete the current task.
2. Check the Warning Indicators
After stopping the engine, check the instrument panel and warning indicators carefully.
Pay particular attention to warnings related to:
Low engine oil pressure
High coolant temperature
Battery or charging system
Fuel system
Engine electronic control system
Record any fault codes displayed by the engine control system. These codes can provide important information for further diagnosis.
3. Carry Out a Basic Inspection
Once the engine has been stopped and has cooled sufficiently, carry out a basic visual inspection.
Check the engine oil level, coolant level, fuel supply, belts, hoses, electrical connections, and visible areas around the engine for signs of oil, fuel, or coolant leakage.
However, do not open the cooling system while the engine is still hot, as pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.
4. Identify the Symptoms
Accurate information about the symptoms can significantly improve the efficiency of troubleshooting.
For example, note whether the engine has:
Difficulty starting
Abnormal knocking or mechanical noise
Excessive black, white, or blue smoke
Overheating
Low oil pressure
Loss of engine power
Unstable engine speed
Excessive fuel or oil consumption
Oil or coolant leakage
The operating conditions before the fault occurred should also be recorded.
5. Avoid Unnecessary Disassembly
If the cause of the problem is not clear, avoid dismantling major engine components without professional guidance.
Unnecessary disassembly can make the problem more difficult to identify and may introduce additional faults. For complex problems, a qualified technician should perform systematic testing and diagnosis.
6. Contact a Professional Technician
If the problem cannot be identified through a basic inspection, contact the engine manufacturer, supplier, or qualified service technician.
Provide as much information as possible, including the engine model, serial number, operating hours, fault codes, photographs, videos, and a detailed description of the symptoms.
This information can help technicians determine the possible cause and recommend the appropriate solution more efficiently.
7. Do Not Restart the Engine Repeatedly
Repeatedly starting an engine that has a serious mechanical or lubrication problem may result in additional damage.
For example, if the engine has very low oil pressure, severe overheating, or abnormal mechanical knocking, repeated operation may cause damage to critical components such as the crankshaft, bearings, pistons, or cylinder head.
